Dental Implants: A Comprehensive Overview

Dental implants are a permanent and highly effective solution for replacing missing teeth. Designed to mimic natural teeth in both form and function, they consist of a titanium post that integrates with the jawbone, topped with a custom-made crown. The implant process involves several carefully planned stages to ensure long-term success.

How Dental Implants Work

1. Surgical Procedure & Healing Abutment Placement

  • Initial Consultation: A 3D scan (CBCT) and digital impressions assess bone quality and plan implant placement.

  • Implant Surgery: Under local anesthesia (or sedation), the dentist surgically places the titanium implant into the jawbone.

  • Healing Abutment: A temporary cap (healing abutment) may be placed to guide gum tissue growth, shaping it naturally for the final crown.

  • Stitches & Initial Healing: The gums are sutured, and the site begins healing (1–2 weeks).

2. Healing Phase: Osseointegration

  • Bone Fusion (3–6 months): The implant fuses with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation (osseointegration).

  • Temporary Tooth (if needed): A removable flipper or temporary crown may be provided for aesthetics during healing.

3. Digital Impression with Intraoral Scanner & Scan Body

  • Scan Body Attachment: A scan body (implant marker) is placed onto the implant.

  • Digital Impression: An intraoral scanner captures precise 3D images of the implant position and surrounding teeth.

  • Custom Prosthesis Design: The digital scan is used to fabricate a lifelike, permanent crown, bridge, or denture.

4. Delivery of the Final Prosthesis

  • Abutment Placement: A connector piece (abutment) is secured to the implant.

  • Crown Attachment: The custom-made crown is fixed onto the abutment, completing the restoration.

  • Final Adjustments: Bite and fit are checked for comfort and function.
