Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): Your Guide to Affordable Dental Care

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new federal program designed to help make dental care more affordable for eligible Canadians. If you struggle to afford routine dental visits, this plan may provide financial assistance for essential treatments.

Who Is Eligible?

You may qualify for the CDCP if you:
✔ Do not have dental insurance (through an employer, private plan, or other program)
✔ Have an annual household net income below $90,000
✔ Are a Canadian resident with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
✔ Have filed your tax return in the previous year

Priority Groups (Rollout Phases)

  • Seniors (65+) – Started in 2023

  • Children under 18 & persons with disabilities – Expected in 2024

  • All remaining eligible Canadians – By 2025

What’s Covered?

The CDCP helps pay for a range of preventive and essential dental services, including:
✔ Check-ups & cleanings
✔ X-rays
✔ Fillings (to treat cavities)
✔ Root canals (in some cases)
✔ Tooth extractions
✔ Dentures (partial & full)

Cosmetic procedures (e.g., teeth whitening, veneers) are not covered.

How to Apply

  1. Check Eligibility – Visit Canada.ca/dental or call 1-800-O-CANADA

  2. Submit Application – Online or by phone

  3. Receive Approval – If eligible, you’ll get a CDCP member card

  4. Visit a Participating Dentist – Present your card to access covered services

How Much Will You Pay?

  • Household income < $70,000 → 100% coverage (no copay)

  • $70,000–$79,999 → 60% coverage (you pay 40%)

  • $80,000–$89,999 → 40% coverage (you pay 60%)
